Deja Vu

1:12 PM

Watched this the other night on DVD. Pretty good film - mind you anything with Denzel Washington in it is bound to be good. He's usually a guaranteed safe bet when selecting films to watch - bit like Morgan Freeman.

The film stylistically feels like Tony Scott's other movies. The story is quite good, and hints are dropped throughout the film that things aren't quite as they appear, and gradually it all unfolds. You will need to pay attention to everything to understand what's going on. There's some good action sequences, and I liked that they didn't really advertise who the villain was. Usually you can look at who's in the film and say, well he's the villain, but it wasn't till later in the film that I recognised the actor playing the bad guy role - it means your not looking out for this person right from the beginning.

Plot Synopsis:

A terrorist bomb on a river boat explodes killing 500+ people, and ATF agent Doug Carlin is assigned to investigate. He discovers some unusual evidence, and some facts that do not make sense, including the body of a woman who died before the explosion, but looks like she was part of the event. Sharing evidence with a government FBI task force, Doug is shown a special surveillance project and uses the technology to further investigate the crime.

Doug later realises that the surveillance technology is somehow interactive, and the team explain that they accidentally opened a window into the past using an artificially generated wormhole. Doug's partner is inadvertently killed after they alter the past, although he had appeared to have been killed in the explosion already. They manage to identify the person responsible for the explosion, by following the life of the young woman who was found dead.

Unwilling to accept that he cannot save the woman, and realising that he has already attempted to change the past, Doug uses the experiment to have himself sent back in time. He rescues the young woman, then works toward stopping the terrorist. A shootout breaks out on the boat, and future-Doug drives the explosive-laden truck into the harbour, killing the terrorist and allowing the woman to escape. Future-Doug is killed in the ensuing explosion, but he has saved all the people on the boat.

The young woman eventually meets present-Doug who has come to investigate the harbor explosion, and she tell him she has met him before. But he doesn't remember.
